On our first full day walked over to near Trinity college to meet the Mary Gibbons Tour bus to go to Newgrange for the day. We hd her brother Michael give the tour that day and he was wonderful. We meet the bus at about 10:30 and we back in time for a nice dinner in the Temple Bar area. Newgrange was constructed over 5,000 years ago (about 3,200 B.C.), making it older than Stonehenge in England and the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt! It was built during the Neolithic or New Stone Age by a farming community that prospered on the rich lands of the Boyne Valley.
Newgrange was a very awe inspiring place, the age and size of the monuments was akin to how it feels to stand at the rim of the Grand Canyon. And when they turned the lights out in the tomb it was breath taking how the light still filtered in and after a moment we could all still see pretty well. How cool that you can put your name in a hat to attend the Solstice there! We also were allowed to visit Tara and I found a cool geocache there called Seat of the High Kings. Upon arrival back into Dublin we stopped in for drinks at M J O'Neils pub where I tried Murphy's stout (not as good as Guiness!) and Lori had some Jameson's. Then we headed to Temple Bar for dinner at Il Vicoletto which was wonderful and as it was early we had the place almost to ourselves. We finished the evening downstairs at the Harding in Darkey Kelly's Bar who ran the local house of ill repute (alledgedly!). Good drinks and live music every night. Lori gets her luggage upon our return to the Harding Hotel in Dublin...yay for her! THE TOUR BEGINS...COME ON |
